In accordance with this belief,we offer helpful strategies and ideas
to motivate high school students to take up a personal initiative that empowers them to engage in community service and foster a strong sense of social responsibility.

Discern & Learn is proud to have mentored its students
in developing empathy for identifying issues in their community and a proactive, problem-solving approach to finding solutions for these problems. Here are a few snapshots of the personal initiatives that some of our students worked on throughout their tenure with us.

Repurpose textile scrap

Reweave was founded by a conscientious trailblazer, Kaina Jain, who was determined not to let the textile waste from her father’s manufacturing business end up in landfills. She launched an initiative to reduce textile waste while increasing its value for the company. By upcycling discarded fabric into laptop sleeves, coasters, & bean bags and selling them at exhibitions, she not only diverted waste from landfills but also generated proceeds to support more local artisans through the initiative.

Marine trash mechanism

Nauticlean, created by bright innovator Samarth Mukhi, is a project dedicated to cleaning and preserving marine environments through smart systems. His prototype has earned multiple accolades from educational and government institutions, recognizing his significant contribution to tackling this global climate challenge. Samarth also reached out to industry experts for possible collaborations.

Book publishing & platform for circular construction material

Waste Management Efforts: Aryavardhan Sarda, passionate about waste management and the circular economy, authored “Waste to Wealth” to promote reducing, reusing, and recycling. The book, launched at top bookstores in Kolkata and Hyderabad and featured in The Telegraph, raised public awareness of sustainable practices. He also founded Oscillate, an online platform for buying and selling waste from construction sites. With plans to expand into other sectors, Aryavardhan’s initiative advances circular business models and sustainable resource use.

Self-sustaining recycling initiative

Teenage activist Paakhi Gupta started a personal initiative called Pride in Buying, where she organized biannual redistribution drives to give the poor access to season-appropriate utilities, including clothes, pushing the envelope for sustainability further. Recognizing the importance of dignity, she charged a nominal fee for these items, allowing beneficiaries to feel the pride of purchasing rather than receiving charity. This approach ensured the initiative’s financial viability as well. Through her innovative model, she successfully mobilized resources and made a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need. To ensure continuity, before she left for university, she collaborated with an NGO and passed on the baton to another student, Aureya Sarraf. Our student, Avani Bisht has also continued the initiative, starting a new chapter in South India.

Community for facially disfigured children

Sudheeksha Reddy and Ishita Rao Juvadi, two compassionate change makers, launched the Specs Foundation, a social initiative dedicated to assisting children with facial disfigurements who often felt marginalized. The young girls organized excursions, yoga sessions and basketball lessons for the kids, instilling a sense of belonging and creating a supportive community. Their humanitarian efforts had a huge impact, helping the children build confidence and find joy in shared experiences.

Mentoring marginalised children

This talented student, Tisya, displays her own art on this page. The page also documents the various art workshops that she has conducted for underprivileged children in the neighbourhood orphanage. She also gives art classes to underprivileged children to help them enhance their hand and motor skills and creativity through these pursuits.

Redistributing surplus resources

A true change maker, Aarshiya Bansal, was moved by the leftover food that went to waste in her father’s banquet hall after functions. She collaborated with NGOs in her locality to gather leftover food from social gatherings, including her father’s banquet hall, and distribute it to the needy. She has captured glimpses of the food distribution drives on her social media handle.

Here is how one of our bright students, Mehreen Kaur, uses this opportunity to establish her own unique brand through a personal web site that highlights her key achievements and initiatives.
